The performance took place inside an old silo at the Art Omi Arts Center in Ghent, NY. The walls of the silo are made of iron that had rusted under the influence of the elements and the passing of time.

I used iron oxide pigment — a form of black rust — and applied it with my hand, pressing it onto an 18-meter-long sheet of paper that wrapped entirely around the interior radius of the space.

Over the course of about fifteen minutes, I inscribed onto the paper the traces of the moment, the energy, and the texture of the silo walls — an effort to preserve information that goes beyond conventional recording, and to play with the very principle on which all media as carriers are based.

Artist statement

The drawing itself visually implies a certain movement; it is
repetitive yet always different. Despite their similarities, the traces can
never be replicated. At times, visible imprints of my hands appear, only to be
smudged and dissipated, expanding across the flat surface like the passing of
time—imprints of motion itself.
The whole action reflects what I usually do
when I draw: leaving a mark through gesture, an act of applying
substance, and process.
I chose to present this work as a performance in
order to highlight its procedural nature and emphasize the idea of recording—to open it, to
share it with the audience, to invite them into something that is otherwise a
solitary act. In the end, I thanked them for their participation, placing
them in an active role alongside me.

Artist Statement

Dimensions of the Line is a light installation developed in collaboration with composer Yongbom Lee, who created an installation-specific score. The composition relies exclusively on the human voice, singing verses by the Roman poet and philosopher Lucretius (c. 99 BC – c. 55 BC) from his seminal work On the Nature of Things—one of the earliest writings to touch upon light, particles, and matter.

At the core of the installation stands a single beam of light cutting diagonally across the gallery space. In the center of the optical table is a custom-built device, developed in collaboration with the Institute of Physics in Zagreb, which transfers sound oscillations directly onto the beam of light. As sound waves interact with it, the beam begins to tremble, breaking the illusion of a flawless, constant line. Visitors are invited to step into this transformed space, where the line gains volume and unfolds into a three-dimensional presence.

Three microscopic cameras capture the beam in real time from different angles, projecting it at large scale. Two projections reveal the oscillations of the beam under the influence of the human voice, while the third captures the movement of dust particles, stirred by subtle air currents—triggered by the opening of doors, the passage of visitors, or the soft streams of the gallery’s hazer machine.

The installation employs light in a twofold way: shaped by the human voice, and as a medium that reveals hidden interactions in space.

1. Voice as a technological agent.
The human voice bends light, unveiling hidden dimensions of space, where the voice itself becomes a tool of technology. This challenges our most basic assumptions about reality, showing that even light, even a line, are not fixed constants. The voice here is both symbolic and direct: the most primal instrument we are born with, amplified and mediated through a device to shape light itself.

The work builds upon Hiršl’s earlier text The Question of Scale (2016), which explored the exponential acceleration of technological progress and its effect on the compression of time and space. Its central argument was that the spaces we create increasingly slip beyond the limits of our scale—so far, perhaps, that we can no longer inhabit or interact with them.

2. Light as revealer.
Light uncovers hidden fluctuations of dust particles, opening up invisible spaces and complexities that constantly surround us yet remain beyond experiential perception. Even something as mundane as dust becomes entangled in a strikingly organized, ephemeral dance.

-

Dimensions of the Line continues Hiršl’s long-standing collaboration with Dr. Neven Šantić from the Institute of Physics in Zagreb, where they jointly explore the creative potential of quantum technologies.

<img width="625" height="1000" width_o="625" height_o="1000" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/91ce686166617bcb5c0d5feb84fafb45274ab2027dc1fadc6131d9246df552a1/frame_1020.jpg" data-mid="232859115" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/625/i/91ce686166617bcb5c0d5feb84fafb45274ab2027dc1fadc6131d9246df552a1/frame_1020.jpg" />

The Politics of Numbers explores the intersection between abstract digital art and the geopolitical implications of quantum technologies. The work visualizes quantum processes, with patterns evoking wave function structures, portraying the hidden layers of reality shaped by randomness. At the core of these abstractions lies the role of quantum random numbers—fundamental to encryption, security, and the global race for quantum supremacy. What is the relationship between abstraction and political influence, historically rooted in the Abstract Expressionism movement, and the present-day strategic use of randomness in the emerging technological cold war, where the mastery of randomness becomes a tool of power?

Quantum Research Group (QRG) is an initiative by artist Hrvoje Hiršl, developed with the support of the Institute of Physics in Zagreb, Croatia. Its aim is to democratise quantum technologies through the research and development of alternative operational models, providing resources to explore, question, and creatively engage with emerging technologies in quantum optics and quantum computing—thus preparing us for their implementation in the coming decades.

We believe in breaking down the arbitrary boundaries between disciplines and merging art, science, and technology into a single exploratory journey.

Magnetic Recordings explores&nbsp;the possibility of embedding a seemingly invisible layer of information in the
image, without changing the visible aspect of it, just the magnetic polarities
of the paint itself. This information can then be read and rerecorded, and it
remains permanently embedded as long as you don't overwrite it.

For this task, I have developed a device, a sort of
"magnetic brush" that enables the storage of information, including
audio message fragments, within black paint as long as it contains "Mars
black" pigment due to its magnetic properties. Mars black (iron oxide
black) is one of the most common and widely used black pigments in artistic
practice.

Artist statement

The series of works “Sound Imprints” uses a self-initiated technique of stochastic painting, a kind of hybrid of a Chladni plate and an analogue laser printer. I developed this technique during the KulturKontakt Artist-in-Residence programme in 2012 and perfected it at the Bildraum Studio Artist-in-Residence programme in Vienna, Austria, in 2021.&nbsp;

The exhibition is part of “The Limit of Representation” series, which began with the eponymous text from 2019, written during my stay at the Max Planck Institute in Germany. This text is a synthesis of research I have been conducting for the past 13 years. The text brings together a series of works that represent an attempt to see and touch the invisible, that is, how to overcome the limitations of our senses through artistic processes and try to see reality as it truly is.

During the performance, a series of 8 ‘prints’ were created in front of the audience. The process of creating these paintings consists of several stages. The first stage features the gradual application of raw toner to the surface of the aluminium composite plate. A transducer is fixed on the plate, a device that converts any surface into a sound one. The next stage features the emitting of sound waves that stimulate the movement of a toner - the movement of particles is observed. After I achieve a certain expressiveness of the print, I melt the toner particles using a quartz lamp. Laser printers use quartz lamps to melt the toner and bond it permanently to the surface. The surface of the plate bends under the impact of elevated temperature, thus creating the topography of the printed image.

By using sound waves, I separate myself from the expression of creation and limit my physical presence in the resulting image. The goal is to create highly expressive prints without concrete physical interaction, by reducing gestures, composition and human impact to a minimum. Preset parameters determine the formal realization of the work, its appearance and the final result. The process of creating the paintings is abstracted almost to the level of pure concept, intending to deconstruct the medium of painting by reducing it to the most fundamental level.

I want to emphasize the inseparability of the artistic act from the artwork - artwork as a document of artistic process and research. Paintings are a physical document of this process. Only then can one see what it is to create an image. It is creating memory, creating a print, imprinting particles on the surface, moving particles under some kind of force. By their nature, prints are recordings of different information on a certain surface, thus it is likely that the concept and process of making them are a work of art, and the resulting paintings are only documentation of this act.

Project description

“Is this Life?” is research into what defines
living entities and the relationship between the audience and robots based on a
swarm of robotic spheres that perform choreographies in space. They react to
each other and to the audience present by movements based on the rules of the
Boid algorithm by Craig Reynolds.

“Is this Life?” is a distributed
monolith, a visually uniform constellation of perfectly spherical porcelain
objects, a sculpture that is permanently searching its position in relation to
the observer, but not only being observed, but also interacting, and
confronting the audience. Monolithic in its presence, but not in its form, it
obscures the underlying mechanisms, inviting the audience to uncover its
principles and discover its inner workings.

The interplay of the spheres with
each other and the audience places viewers in an endlessly feedbacking system
of information. Robots and audience alternately become receivers, transmitters,
or the data itself. This system highlights the adaptive and symbiotic
relationships between humans and technology.

It questions the relation between
living and non-living as an obsolete distinction, an arbitrary definition, that
changes over time. In reality, we have an exponentially increasing number of
non-living entities interacting with and defining our daily reality. This seeks
closer attention and more speculative studies.
This is precisely what “Is this
Life?” is about. It is a continuous research project spanning over time, an
adaptive system based on natural principles, showing emergent behavior and
different forms of communication and interaction. Not only seeking its place
among the people, but also making the audience question their place inside a
human ecosystem, one increasingly being populated with other life systems.

The shape of the sphere and the
material clearly belong to something inorganic and non-living, and in its form
ancient, beyond time, but the behavior and the movement are organic and
life-like. This creates a contrast; it implies the building blocks and represents
principles surrounding us, as something beyond our daily experience and
universal. Perfect spheres are rarely found in nature but nevertheless appear
in more elusive forms, like atoms, bubbles, and water drops to megastructures
like planets and stars. This gives the robots a universal, almost unreal shape,
making them hover on the ground, moving but seemingly standing still. The
principles of their movement and their character are unclear.

The size and material of the
spheres are carefully selected in relation to human size and perception, and
our most fundamental environment. The shells are made from ceramics, used for
thousands of years in human history, the most fundamental material, coming from
erosion of rocks under the influence of elements from our environment, but at
the same time highly technological, used in high precision mechanics and space
shuttles due to its highly specific and versatile properties.

Despite being a technologically
rich installation, “Is this Life?” carefully hides its complexity. The
algorithm and the robots, hosted within smooth porcelain shells, point to more
fundamental organizational laws rather than showcasing themselves.

The spheres produce a rolling
sound, resonating through space. Their surface reflects and bends light,
creating an impression of a perfect virtual space with pronounced physicality,
akin to entering a hyper-realistic simulation.

Introduction

	Reality
is defined by physical/natural laws (Greek: physis=nature) like the Newton’s
law of gravitation, that can be abstracted into mathematical formulas/codes/principles.
One of these principles is self-organization and the area of swarm
intelligence.

Swarm
refers to loosely structured cluster of interacting agents. Swarm structure
arises from very simple rules that the agents follow. Through these rules a
complex behavior emerges. The individuals in the swarm/flock are autonomous
agents. They have a limited ability to perceive the environment - an agent can
observe other agents only if they are within a limited distance. They
independently process the information received from the environment and make
decisions based on it. There is no leader to define the behaviour of the group. Autonomous
agents create robust systems that can easily adapt to changes in their
environment.

Complex
behaviour emerges from three simple steering behaviours:

Alignment - adjusting the direction and amount of speed

Cohesion - forming groups with nearby individuals

Separation -&nbsp;avoiding crowds and maintaining space

Its
organization can’t be interpreted by observing an individual agent and only
occurs through the interaction between them. It is
considered a decentralized self-organized system. Swarm intelligence systems
have an ability to act in a coordinated way, without anyone controlling them,
externally or internally. It can be also used to describe social behavior of
humans.

One of the more popular algorithms
used for swarming is Boid algorithm following Rainold rules. Craig Reynolds is
an American computer engineer specialised in computer graphics and modelling of
artificial life. Most of his work is based on procedural computer programs that
simulate the behaviour of large groups of animals. In 1986, he created a
computer model for animation movements of animals in flocks (such as birds or
fish). He called these generic units used as autonomous agents boids (bird-oid
object, "bird-like. object”).

In the field of swarm robotics, tasks
like mapping or foraging make use of boids’ simulations. This is because these
tasks lend themselves well to be solved by a group of small robots. The installation&nbsp; Is this Life? will use the same
principles to create intricate interactions between robots and the audience.

Topics
This complex interactive installation opens up
a set of questions about
several topics:

Society – for
understanding society as an organism and interrelation between human beings

AI – to study
different manifestations of collective intelligence, as one of the possible
types of intelligence, as a subset of artificial intelligence (AI)

Interaction –
to test and implement different ways of interaction, with an emphasis on
indirect means of interaction, where the interaction is not immediately obvious
or instantly gratifying, as opposed to what we are normally used to expect from
digital technologies

	Agency – the
presence of the audience is crucial for the system, they insert energy into the
system and change its behaviour

Post-digital
materiality – the division between digital and non-digital is blurring, we cannot
talk anymore of a clear boundary in our surrounding. We live in a moment when digital
technology is so omnipresent and accessible that it is not any more our primary
focus itself. The most important aspect of digital technologies becomes the
experience that it enables, creating an easier transition between the two.

The title

The
title Is this Life? references Erwin Schrödinger’s book "What
is Life?" (1944), where he introduces the idea of genetic material as
hereditary information, influencing the discovery of DNA. Schrödinger defines
an organism through the role of negentropy and proposes developing a universal
formula of life.

Description of the collaboration

Project development can be divided in to 5 basic segments. These are
disciplines required for the realisation of the whole project:

Software
High-level control like localisation
and coordination/organisation will be developed by LARICS Lab from the
University of Zagreb. For the localisation we will use Pozyx system and for the
organisation of the robots, we will use a Boid algorithm following Rainold
rules. Low-level control will be done by TU
Delft and Hochschule Aalten.

Electronics&nbsp;Mechanics

The electronics and mechanics of the robot are developed in collaboration between the TU Delft and Hochschule Aalten. This includes developing and assembling the circuitry
for powering and controlling the robot, building the gearing and the bearing
construction. The same applies to the induction wireless charging system that
will power the robot.

Ceramics
Developing the mould and casting the porcelain shells for the outer
spheres of the robot are done by&nbsp;Quark-centar for ceramics in Rijeka,
Croatia, by Professor Dražen Vitolović and Rino Banko.

Interaction
After the prototype faze is finished we will scale up the production to
24 robots and additional 6 robots as redundancy, the total of 30 robots will be
built. In this phase we will finetune the organization and control and start
working on the interaction with the audience. This will be done in
collaboration between the TU
Delft and LARICS Lab.
Delft design labs are part of TU Delft, specialised in human-centered AI
and thus being ideal collaborator for this delicate and very much experimental
phase of the project. We will try out several ways of interaction based on adaptive
behaviour of swarms. All the interactions will be biologically driven,
mimicking complex behaviours of self-organisational systems.

It not only looks great, it sounds great, which means that it has no cracks in the structure and has been baked properly. The firing of the kiln and the cooling program took 12 hours and the maximal temperature was 1120 C.

	Conclusion

“Is this Life?” creates a thought-provoking and immersive
experience. It highlights the adaptive and symbiotic relationships between
humans and technology, encouraging audiences to reflect on their place in an
increasingly complex ecosystem populated by both living and non-living
entities. By focusing on the experiential and philosophical questions it
raises, using advanced technology as a medium to convey these concepts rather
than as an end in itself.

Furthermore, the project explores interaction between humans and
a non-distinct ‘intelligent’ system that seems to be the physical
representation of a black box: elegantly designed as a perfect sphere without
features that betray orientation, sensorial capabilities, mechanism of
movement, or any technology inside. The robotic spheres allow for unique
physical swarm simulations, including a live audience in a public gallery.
There, its carefully chosen size creates enough displacement to perform spatial
negotiation maneuvers with humans while its physical appearance maintains a
very high visual abstraction level.

Exceptional
Point is a light installation based on quantum optics,
a field I have been researching for a while. It questions the properties
of reality. It developed from the light installation Collapse that was connecting
the human scale to the quantum scale.

Project statement

An Exceptional point is
the point in which the system begins to manifest properties that haven’t been there
until recently. It is a transition from a characteristic, base state to an
exotic state, a crossing into up to now unknown, sensitive balance between
phases, characteristics that did not exist, but subsequently appeared.Questions of the appearance and the characteristics of the system are
increasingly important, and are part of our everyday life - constant
fluctuations without a stable form, sudden changes without a fixed state. At
the moment when formal properties are lost and replaced on demand, what stays
characteristic? What is authentic, when what we see is no longer what it is?
